Final Major Project – Week 3

This week I started off responding to one of my chosen designers Faustine Steinmetz. Steinmetz turned the idea of denim inside out with her first collection, she produced her own denim and her intricate hand-loomed pieces were created from recycled from a thrift store. I loved the idea of working with denim so I started to sample parts of it in my sketchbook, distressing the edges. Which also fitted perfectly with my theme. I also search a lot through WGSN for inspiration. I found a certain trend called Nature which included an aspect of recycling different sorts of materials.

Responding to Faustine Steinmetz I made my own fashion illurstartion collection, experimenting with different structures of denim, skirts, jackets, jeans, tops and shirts. Also given them the distressed weathered look. It took me a while to produce as I used a mixture of mediums to layer up including, comic markers, drawing colour pencils, water colours and fine liners to outline. Which as an end piece I thought looked very strong, as I may blow up to A2 and show at the final show. 12910606_10154061482199207_1442272691_n.jpg

Final Major Project – Week 2

Final Major Project – Week 2

This week I have focussed on gathering primary research, I first visited a victorian secret garden which was very interesting to walk through as everything was overgrown, and had a weathered look. Which was perfect for what I was looking for. I also walked around Newcastle taking pictures of distressed areas, abandoned buildings, building sites, fishing boats, structures, anything with texture.

I looked at an Italian artist named Rotella which I thought linked nicely with some of the distressed wall images. I instantly fell in love with his work. He’s well known for his works of collage and psychographics, made from torn advertising posters, featuring 1950’s iconic Hollywood stars. The artist uses posters, commercial billboards and ripped paper in his work. He’s inspired by an up-to-date theme of graffiti and like a graffiti artist, he would express his political views, messages through his billboards and posters.

The atmosphere set from Rotella’s is very interesting. The iconic stars are normally presented as the epitome of beautiful people. But in my opinion, he’s advertising the stars in a different way as the images are distressed, worn and looked like they’ve been decaying. This could connote Rotella having a secret message behind the posters, meaning that these people are not perfect just because they are huge stars. For this reason, I think his work gives off a somber mood as it’s showing idols as imperfect.

I love Rotella’s style of work I think they’re vibrant, graphic, suggestive, contemplative, dramatic and bold. The textured surfaces fit perfectly with my theme and also the pictures I’ve already taken for primary research.

Interconnections Project

Definition of the word –

In telecommunications, interconnection is the physical linking of a carrier’s network with equipment or facilities not belonging to that network. The term may refer to a connection between a carrier’s facilities and the equipment belonging to its customer, or to a connection between two (or more) carriers.

I was set the task from a University to base a mini project on the word ‘web’ which first sparked my interests to include that in my interconnections idea.
I really liked the idea of focusing on connections between different materials, rather than recreating the typical spiders web, thinking about how I could construct different textures together in numerous ways. Other examples of Thinking about the type of primary research I would take inspiration from I thought about various types of distressed textures, things like fishing nets, cobwebs, old house decay, nature. I also thought of architecture with a lot of detail, In this project I want to also create some surface design patterns, from my drawings, my own fabric samples, primary research etc.  I have started to create digital mood boards for this research to experiment with different colour schemes, material how they link together and also potential garment ideas from the themes. Here are two that I think contrast perfectly.

Final Major Project – Potential Idea 1

My first idea for my final major project is ‘Web’. I received a project from a university to submit at my interview, and I liked the freedom of having your own interpretation of the word. I first googled the exact definition, and created a spider diagram for the ideas that popped into my head. I then printed off suitable images from pinterest and Design Inspiration to create a moodboard. Using a scalpel knife I cut out different shapes to represent a web to add texture to the board, which I think works quite well.

I would like to focus more on connections between fabrics, like knotting, weaving, threads, construction, texture, fabric manipulation, and many more ideas. For the AMFI project I have to design and make an object out of recycled materials. I have the idea to make iPhone cases using various materials, like plastic bags to then laser cut into. To do this I would have to find a mould of an iPhone to then construct the materials over the top. image1.JPG
